Hattie
was abandoned when she was 8 months old. Her name was
"Pain" like pain in the neck. Her "loving
family" left her behind when they moved to California because they
were afraid she "wouldn't survive the trip".
Within 10 months of coming to live with us, she
earned her first AKC obedience title. My daughter showed her
in 4-H and AKC Junior Showmanship capturing Grand Champions and first
places. Shortly thereafter, Hattie earned her Delta Society Pet Partner
therapy dog certification. She began visiting our local
nursing home that summer and has visited every week since. All
during that time, she also trained as an air scent Search and Rescue Dog.
What is amazing about Hattie is her
versatility. Now she is excelling in agility. Hattie
just earned her Novice Jumpers with Weaves Preferred title and her Novice
Agility Preferred title. She also has 2 legs on her Open Agility
Preferred title which she earned in only 4 shows! One more leg will
earn her the privilege to run in Excellent!
Two week later, she earned her German BH
obedience title, also in Boise! It is not often that one dog can excel in so many different
areas. Every time I introduce something new to Hattie, she embraces
it with enthusiasm and intelligence. Her athletic ability just
continues to reveal itself. And her temperament never shows
hesitation or fear.
When Hattie was 3 she was diagnosed with
Epilepsy. At that time, I had to retire her from her Search and
Rescue work since an epileptic seizure could compromise a mission.
It was heartbreaking, but what I have learned from Hattie is that no matter what
obstacles are placed before you - abandonment, challenge of the unknown,
or physical disability - life is there to cherish and to share with
others. Hattie embodies the spirit of love, ethic and personal
grace I hope that others and myself learn from and enjoy with
gratitude.
I hope you enjoy this glimpse of her! For
